Learn About NLP

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of human excellence.

It was created in the 1970s by Richard Bandler and John Grindler. They wanted to understand how people produced excellence, so they studied a number of people who excelled in their field. Those they studied included: hypnotherapist Milton Eriksson MD, family therapist Virginia Satir and gestalt therapist Fritz Perls.

Once Bandler and Grindler discovered how these people produced excellence they created a number of models, which others could use to replicate the excellent behaviour in themselves and others.

NLP has developed into a set of tools and techniques, which shows you how to run your mind and to create effective change in your thoughts, beliefs, behaviours and state.

But it’s more than just a set of tools and techniques it is also an attitude and a methodology. NLP is about curiosity, a willingness to experiment and the use of modelling, experimentation and processes.

Ultimately NLP allows you to achieve excellent results in both your personal and professional life.

Definition of NLP

Lets look at the official definition of NLP:

Neuro:

The nervous system (the mind), through which our experience is processed via the five senses: Visual, Auditory, Kinaesthetic, Olfactory, Gustatory

Linguistic:

Language and other non-verbal communication systems, e.g. hand gestures, physiology, through which our neural representations are coded, ordered and given meaning. Includes: Pictures, Sounds, Feelings, Tastes, Smells, Words (Self Talk)

Programming:

The ability to discover and utilize the programmes that we run (our communication to ourselves and others) in our neurological systems to achieve our specific and desired outcomes

In other words, NLP is how to use the language of the mind to consistently achieve our specific and desired outcomes.

Applications of NLP

NLP can be used widely in therapy, education and business. Here are just a few areas of application:

Therapy

  • Personal change and development
  • Smoking cessation
  • Weight loss
  • Relationships
  • Phobias

Education

  • Learning strategies
  • Attention Deficit Disorder - ADD
  • Dyslexia
  • Self-esteem

Business

  • Sales optimisation
  • Presentations
  • Goal setting
  • Corporate values

NLP Presuppositions

In NLP we live and work by a number of convenient assumptions - these are the presuppositions of NLP. Here’s a taster:

  • Respect for the other persons model of the world
  • Resistance in a client is a sign of a lack of rapport – there are no resistant clients only inflexible communicators
  • People are not their behaviours – accept the person, change the behaviour
  • Everyone is doing the best that they can with the resources they have available
  • The map is not the territory – the words we use are not the event or the item they represent
  • You are in charge of your mind and therefore your results
  • People have all the resources they need to succeed and achieve their desired outcomes
  • The meaning of communication is the response you get
  • All procedures should be designed to increase choice
  • All procedures should increase wholeness
  • The law of requisite variety – the system or person with the most flexibility will control the system

NLP provides an instruction manual of how the mind works and introduces you to your unconscious mind. It provides techniques to deliver change in yours and others personal and professional life, and to ultimately achieve infinite excellence.
